Well, a friend told me I should try this blogging thing. But I thought I needed to find something passionate to blog about before I starting blathering...otherwise I'd get bored. Plus who really reads blogs anyways?
So I thought about my passions and considered which one(s) I wanted to share and have archived by the Internet or others. Forensic osteology? nah...love it but don't want to write about it. Dogs? rather spend time with animals than talk about them. IT? It's my career...need a break from it. What else....ah...atheism! Should generate some responses from the digital realm as everyone has an opinion on religion. So, let's make this an Atheism blog.
Although I think atheism is a poor word as there is no other words for "non-astrologers" or "non-bakers". Plus "atheism" is "against theo or god(s)" I'm not against something that doesn't exist! Rather, I'm against religion; look at how it ruins the world. My optimistic side tells me that this world would be a much better (not perfect) place if religion ceased to exist.
So I'll blog enthusiastically about atheism. Hope others join in the discussion. Actually hope some religious (sane and open-minded) person(s) join in too. If you read this, let's not engage in personal attacks or too much profanity. Respect and open-mindedness is sooo lacking in this world in general; let's rise above and be respectful of each other. We can criticize, argue, disagree and be passionate without giving offense to others.

Since western modern day laws are based on morals inspired by Christianity. How can organized religion be blamed for governments installing those same laws to protects its citizens?
Interesting...morality in many religions is questionable considering that the worlds worst atrocities have been committed in the name of religion. Crusades, 911, Holocaust (Hitler was Christian afterall). Our current, and antiquated laws are totally insufficient to deal with todays' illegalities. Perhaps that explains why there is discord, murders, theft and social strife; religion is the cause of the problem of our laws.
I think it is the lack of consequences that has helped lead to a degradation in society morality. Religion has consequences...no matter what belief and this helps people distinguish right from wrong.
Hitler may have been raised a Catholic (in a majority protestant Lutheran country) but it's a flawed argument to call him a Christian. He didn't do anything in the name of God as Nazism was his true religion. Hitler, like many secular leaders used religion to gain popularity with the masses. In one breath claiming Christian upbringing and in another...
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity.... "
Which modern day laws that affect people on a regular day need to be changed? And is that the fault of religion or political apathy?
Typo...Let me amend something...He did say things in the name of God but it was to gain popularity among the people.
But you can't blame religion when someone does that.
In regards to Hitler being a Christian see: "The Speeches of Adolf Hitler April 1922-August 1939", Vol 1 of 2, pp 19-20. Oxford university press "My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter..." Hilter goes on to talk more about his Christian belief.
Not sure I understand what you mean by "religion has consequences"? From a larger view, I think the consequence of religion is violence (2 thessalonians 1:6-9, John 15:6, Matthew 5:18-20, deuteronomy 13:6, 8-15), genocide (Deuteronomy 7:1-2), degradation of women (Deuteronomy 22:13-21 and Exodus 21:7-11), slavery (leviticus 25:44-46, ephesians 6:5, 1 Timothy 6:1-4) it stultifies free thought, it is incredibly narrow in its perception of the world and it is incredibly inconsistent in its message.
The idea that Christianity has a right to uphold or force moral codes of conduct are frightening. It is an egalitarian and arrogant reasoning, especially considering the inconsistency of the messages within the bible.
Instead, human reasoning and actual thought rather than blindly following 2000 year old writings should drive the course of morality and ethics. We are an evolving species with an evolving society, we cannot rely upon the strict, unchanging, confusing rigidity of religion to dictate human morality.
Hell is the consequence for sin...that's what i mean.
I'm also not convinced with the Hitler argument of him being a Christian. People can say what they want...the leader of China could say he is a devout Buddhist and then start a war with Taiwan. This doesn't mean that Buddhism is the cause of the war. It means he used that to gain political support.
We both know that Hitler didn't attend church on a regular basis and that in fact there was quite an occult movement inside the inner group of Nazi leaders. Blame that religion more than anything. Himmler thought he was the reincarnation of 10th century Saxon King Heinrich (Henry the Fowler ironically enough...that would inspire any chicken farmer).
Christianity also does not have a right to uphold or force moral codes but you live in a country in which the laws were made using that doctrine as a guideline. There is no refuting that.
I'm also curious about one thing. Many religions have a mandate teaching the gospel to those that do not believe. In the Bible, Christ tells his disciples to go out to teach and advocates that all believers do so and teach a message of hope. It's part of the doctrine.
However, this is not so for an atheist, so why is it that atheist's feel the need to convert people to atheism? What is the motivation?
